Media Trust Group, the publisher of Daily Trust, has launched a new digital newsroom. This newsroom combines its newspaper, television, radio, and online services. The goal is to improve teamwork, speed up news delivery, and reach more people across different platforms.

The newsroom was launched in Abuja on Thursday. It brings together the editorial teams of Daily Trust, Weekend Trust, Aminiya, Teen Trust, Trust TV, Trust Radio, and Digital Trust. This is all supported by artificial intelligence tools and audience analytics that give real-time data.

Ibrahim Shehu, the Group Editorial Director, said this new setup allows journalists and editors to work together from the very start. Instead of working separately for different platforms, they will collaborate in one place.

"This newsroom is one newsroom, many platforms," he said during the launch.

Shehu explained that reporters can now file stories from the field or home. Editors for newspapers, producers for TV, radio presenters, and digital journalists can all access the same materials at the same time. They can then prepare these stories for their specific audiences.

A single investigation can turn into a newspaper article, a TV documentary, a radio talk, a podcast, or a digital explainer. It all depends on how the audience wants to consume the story.

"Not the same content repeated everywhere, but the same truth told in the form each audience prefers," he said.

He added that the newsroom's AI content management system will help with coordination, support fact-checking, and allow editors to keep an eye on audience behavior. This includes what people read, watch, listen to, and where they access this content.

Shehu said the technology is meant to support journalists, not replace them. He stressed that reporters and editors will still be responsible for verification and editorial judgment.

The new system should also help the English and Hausa language teams work together better. This will allow them to create stories that are credible and accessible to audiences in both languages.

Kabiru Yusuf, the Chairman of Media Trust Group’s Board of Directors, reminded everyone about the company’s start in Kaduna in 1998. He mentioned that the company now has about 30 shareholders.

Yusuf described the challenges the organization faced in its early years. They had a small team and struggled to produce the first edition of the newspaper before hiring enough staff.

Reflecting on the company’s growth, he mentioned that Media Trust had been misunderstood over the years. He noted the difficulties of running a newspaper during military rule.

Yusuf said the company was wrongly linked to two former military leaders, Muhammadu Buhari (1983 to 1985) and Ibrahim Babangida (1985-1993). He explained that the link to Buhari was due to some founders of Daily Trust working as media consultants for him. The link to Babangida was because his printing press in Kaduna had a deal with Daily Trust to print its papers.

He also talked about press freedom and the duty of journalists to tell the truth, even when it is difficult or could affect important relationships.

Yusuf warned against letting personal relationships with powerful people affect journalism. He emphasized the need for fairness in reporting.

"Fairness demands we should listen," he said.

Ahmed Shekarau, the Group Chief Executive Officer, said the new digital newsroom is a strategic investment. It aims to make the organization more in tune with changing audience habits and technology.

"The future of the media lies in our ability to understand and serve our audiences better," he said.

Shekarau added that merging the group’s platforms would improve access to their journalism. It will also allow the organization to respond better to audience needs.

He mentioned that this investment would create chances to strengthen bonds with audiences and provide more value to commercial partners through coordinated campaigns across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.

The group noted that audience data would help editors see how people engage with their content. They will use this information to improve coverage, but without letting audience metrics control editorial decisions.

This initiative is part of Media Trust Group’s plan to build a media organization that is driven by digital platforms as more people shift to consuming news online and on mobile.
