Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, has announced that superstar captain, Lionel Messi, will not start in their 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Jordan. This news came during a pre-match press conference.

Reports from Argentina and international football sources, including a video shared by Fabrizio Romano on Saturday, confirmed this. The announcement followed a question from the well-known 91-year-old journalist, Enrique Macaya Márquez, who is covering his 18th World Cup.

Scaloni emphasized that he would not have shared this information with any other reporter. He explained that in response to Macaya Márquez's question, he did not reveal the full lineup but mentioned that Messi would come on in the second half.

"It’s a pleasure to be able to answer your question. We’ve known each other for a long time. When I played in Argentina, I never stopped watching him. I’ll answer your question because it’s you Leo is going to start on the bench.

"I would never reply to any journalist on this topic right now… but because it is coming from you, I will tell you Messi will not start," the coach stated.

He also expressed admiration, saying, "I respect you too much, I am so proud to see you here." Scaloni then went over to hug Macaya Márquez and took photos with him, which earned applause from those present.

In reaction to the news, #THE_SCORELINE_X tweeted, "This is an absolutely beautiful story from the World Cup press conference… Absolute respect for a true legend of football journalism. What a moment."

Another user, #yeamyth, added, "A wholesome moment… the whole press conference stopped to applaud Enrique! Scaloni provided such an incredible answer… Messi will go to the bench. You are a true legend."

Messi has been dealing with fitness issues during the tournament. He is expected to come in as a substitute, which will help Scaloni manage his workload as Argentina moves forward in the competition.

The Albiceleste are still strong contenders under Scaloni’s guidance after their 2022 victory. This news comes just before Argentina’s important match, with fans eager to see how the team mixes experience with player rotation.

Argentina supporters are now waiting for the complete lineup announcement as the team works towards advancing in the 2026 World Cup.
