Ex-Argentina captain Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport. He called this recognition an honour that goes beyond his success on the football field.

Messi talked about what the award means to him. He shared that his father was very excited about it and wanted him to attend the ceremony, even with his busy match schedule.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X on Friday, Messi said, “My father was extremely excited about this award.

“We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award.”

The Inter Miami forward explained that the honour means more than just his achievements in football. He pointed out its wider importance.

“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career,” he said.

Messi also mentioned that his father was very happy about the recognition. He is sure his father is also enjoying this moment.

“Honestly, he was very happy about this recognition and that’s why I’m sure he’s enjoying it too,” he said.

This award adds to Messi’s impressive list of individual awards. He has become one of football’s most celebrated players.

The Argentine has won several Ballon d’Or titles, lifted the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022, and has had great success at club level, especially during his time at Barcelona.

The Princesa de Asturias Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in different areas. These include sport, the arts, science, and international cooperation.
