MTN Nigeria has given Ogbogbo Baptist Grammar School in Ogun State N1.5 million for coming second in the fourth season of its MTN Champs athletics competition.

The telecom company also donated sports gear like javelins and jerseys to the school. This is to encourage sports development at the grassroots level and inspire students to chase their athletic dreams.

During the presentation, MTN’s Senior Manager for Sales and Trade Development in Ogun State, Gbenga Olalandu, told students to balance sports with their studies. He said doing well in sports should not mean neglecting education.

Olalandu explained that the initiative aims to find, celebrate, and nurture young sports talents. He wants students to grow their skills not just in the classroom.

“In those days, they would say, ‘Read your book, read your book, read your book.’ But now, everybody wants to be Ronaldo or Messi. You can still be Ronaldo or Messi and have a very good education, so we want them to combine both,” he said.

He mentioned that sports help build relationships and unity among people. He stressed that MTN’s commitment to connecting people goes beyond telecoms. It also includes projects that bring communities together.

According to him, the company sees itself as a partner in the growth of young people. They are dedicated to supporting platforms that let these youths show their talents.

The school’s coach, Oluwafemi Nasirudeen, praised MTN for investing in grassroots sports. He urged secondary schools in Ogun State to give students chances to train after school.

He pointed out that regular training is key to boosting young athletes' performance and getting them ready for future competitions. Nasirudeen believes more support from schools will help students grow their sports skills and compete better at higher levels.

Bolanle Shebi-Omo, the Vice Principal of Ogbogbo Baptist Grammar School, also thanked MTN for recognizing the school’s success and for the sports gear.

She encouraged the telecom company to keep investing in programs that promote youth growth and create chances for students to shine.

The fourth season of the MTN Champs competition included four secondary schools from South-West Nigeria. It provided students a chance to show their sports skills and compete for recognition.
