Excitement filled Joga-Orile, a historic community in Yewaland, Ogun State, as the second edition of the WAMUFAT/Nigeria School Sport Federation annual sports event came to an end at the Agroterra Sport Complex. The camp lasted five days and featured sports activities, mentorship, and youth development.
Young athletes from six states across Nigeria's South-West gathered in the peaceful town. They included primary school pupils and secondary school teenagers.
Over 300 participants, aged 6 to 16, received professional coaching in football, athletics, chess, netball, golf, lawn tennis, and ayo. Apart from competition, the program included leadership, mentorship, and educational support sessions aimed at helping the young athletes grow.
During the opening ceremony, NSSF President, Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, emphasized the federation's focus on finding talent at the grassroots level.
"The Nigeria School Sport Federation remains committed to collaborating with organisations and individuals who share our vision of developing school sports and empowering the next generation of champions," she stated.
She also called on government bodies and private investors to back initiatives that mix sports with education. She highlighted the need for sustainable opportunities for young athletes.
Mrs. Fatimo Muhammed, founder of WAMUFAT, promised to make the camp a regular event in the region’s sports calendar. She urged Nigerians, especially former athletes abroad, to support grassroots sports development across the country.
Abdulrasheed Afonja, Chairman of Agroterra Resort, shared this view. He said hosting the camp would remain a priority as long as it focuses on empowering young people.
The event welcomed dignitaries like His Royal Majesty Oba Prof. Saka Adeola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, and Dr. Lukmon Kiadese, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education.
The five-day program ended with a lively Community Race Day and an awards ceremony. Outstanding participants received certificates and cash prizes.
The successful end of this second edition shows the growing importance of grassroots sports initiatives. They help discover, nurture, and empower young athletes while strengthening the link between sports, education, and community development.
