The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Ismail Yusuf, has called for smart investments and digital upgrades to improve Hajj fund management. He wants to lower the cost of pilgrimage and secure financial benefits for future pilgrims.

Mr Yusuf made this statement while speaking as a key panellist at the 8th International Hajj Fund Forum in 2026. The event took place on Thursday at the Jakarta International Convention Centre in Indonesia.

This global forum, organized by Indonesia's Hajj Financial Management Agency, brought together decision-makers, Sharia finance experts, and leaders to discuss sustainable ways to handle Hajj funds amid rising economic challenges.

Digital upgrades are essential for managing Hajj

The forum focused on the theme "Sustainable Hajj Fund Management Through Strategic Synergy and Digital Transformation." They looked at the growing economic issues affecting pilgrimage operations, increasing costs, and the need to protect the long-term benefits of Hajj funds.

A statement from NAHCON’s Head of Information and Publications, Shafii Mohammed, mentioned that Mr Yusuf shared Nigeria’s experiences and views during a key panel discussion. He spoke alongside BPKH Executive Board Chief Fadlul Imansyah and other international guests.

He highlighted the need for cooperation among relevant agencies, stronger partnerships, and good digital systems to shield Hajj operations from financial instability worldwide.

"The future of Hajj administration depends on our collective ability to innovate. Managing Hajj funds efficiently is no longer just about financing the immediate next pilgrimage; it is about protecting wealth and ensuring sustainable benefits for future generations of pilgrims. By leaning into technological transformations and cementing strategic ties with key global partners like Indonesia, NAHCON is positioning Nigeria at the forefront of transparent and economically sound Hajj operations in line with the interests of current and future generations of pilgrims," Mr Yusuf said.

NAHCON wants to invest to cut costs

Mr Yusuf also pointed out the importance of making strategic investments in high-return infrastructure projects along the Hajj value chain. He mentioned hospitality and logistics as key areas where investments could lower accommodation costs for pilgrims while providing stable returns for the Hajj fund.

He believes such investments will strengthen the financial base of Hajj administration and lessen the impact of rising costs related to pilgrimage activities. This plan aligns with the larger goal of managing Hajj funds to not only meet immediate needs but also create lasting economic value for future pilgrims.

Nigeria and Indonesia aim for stronger financial ties

The forum included opening speeches from notable Indonesian figures, including the Minister of Hajj and Umrah, K.H. Mochamad Yusuf, and the Vice Minister of Finance, Juda Agung. Participants praised Nigeria's active role in discussions and its interest in building partnerships with other Muslim-majority nations.

The talks focused on using financial technologies, institutional collaboration, and sustainable investment models to modernize Hajj administration and enhance fund management.

Progress towards sustainable Hajj funding

NAHCON’s participation in the 8th International Hajj Fund Forum is an important step in Nigeria's aim to create more independent, technology-based, and sustainable ways of managing Hajj funds. The commission's interactions with global partners are expected to boost knowledge-sharing and cooperation on financial innovation, investment plans, and institutional reforms to improve Hajj operations.

The wider goal is to create a financially stable system that supports today’s pilgrims while protecting wealth and providing long-term benefits for future generations.
