The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is working to improve Hajj management. They plan to do this through engaging key partners, boosting pilgrim welfare, and making operations better. Their goal is to make the pilgrimage experience better for all.

The commission is also involving traditional leaders, government workers, and security agencies. This is to enhance coordination, educate pilgrims, ensure safety, and improve services ahead of the next Hajj.

Ismail Yusuf, the chairman of the commission, shared this during a visit from the former Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF), Yayale Ahmed, on Thursday.

In a statement from Shafii Mohammed, head of Information and Publications Division of NAHCON, Mr. Ahmed gave strategic advice and support to the NAHCON leadership. He encouraged them to keep improving Hajj management and services for Nigerian pilgrims.

The statement quoted Mr. Ahmed praising the progress made under Yusuf’s leadership, especially the focus on pilgrims’ welfare. He said that paying attention to pilgrims’ needs is key to making their experience better before, during, and after the pilgrimage.

In reply, Mr. Yusuf called Mr. Ahmed an important partner. He said Ahmed’s experience and knowledge could help in the ongoing efforts to reform Hajj management. He thanked the former SGF for his visit and his interest in the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims. Yusuf assured him that the commission would continue to seek advice from stakeholders to implement practical changes.

NAHCON Boosts Engagement with Stakeholders

This visit is part of a series of meetings between NAHCON and key partners as they prepare for the 2027 Hajj. They aim to improve how operations are coordinated.

On 30 September, the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Bamalli, visited NAHCON chairman in Abuja. He promised that traditional institutions would support better Hajj management.

The emir said that managing thousands of pilgrims needs careful planning, honesty, and commitment. He also pointed out how traditional institutions can help in educating and mobilising pilgrims about registration and preparations for the pilgrimage.

On 7 October, the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, visited Mr. Yusuf. They talked about how to enhance cooperation on pilgrim safety, crowd management, security, and coordination during Hajj operations.

The NSCDC promised to continue supporting the commission’s reform efforts. The NAHCON chairman also emphasized the need for teamwork among agencies to ensure safer and better-coordinated Hajj operations.

These meetings show how important it is for the commission, traditional institutions, security agencies, state pilgrims’ welfare boards, and licensed private tour operators to work together. This helps manage the growing complexities of Hajj logistics.

Saudi Arabia Provides Extra 10,000 Slots

In another development, Saudi Arabia has approved 10,000 more Hajj slots for Nigeria for the 2027 pilgrimage. This raises Nigeria’s total from 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims.

NAHCON shared this news on 1 October. They said the increase is due to ongoing high-level talks between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Under the new plan, 7,500 slots will go to state Muslim pilgrims’ welfare boards, agencies, and commissions. The remaining 2,500 slots will go to seven licensed tour operator companies.
