The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has kicked off a six-month mentorship scheme. This program will link 25 young Nigerian researchers with 25 experienced scientists. The goal is to boost research skills and nurture the next wave of scientific leaders in Nigeria.

The Research Leaders Mentorship (ReLM) Programme aims to provide young scientists with access to seasoned researchers. It will offer them guidance, research networks, and chances to work together on projects.

The academy mentioned that this scheme will assist Nigerian postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers who are within seven years of finishing their highest degrees.

The program officially started with an orientation workshop on 7 September. Abubakar Sambo, the President of NAS, signed the statement announcing it.

How the scheme will operate

In this initiative, mentees will be paired with established researchers based on their research interests and career goals. The six-month period will let participants talk about their research progress, career growth, challenges, and professional aims with their mentors.

The program will also include sessions on how to create strong research proposals, share scientific findings, build careers in research, and develop professional networks.

Tackling research challenges

The academy stated that this scheme was created to respond to the issues faced by early-career researchers. These include a lack of access to experienced mentors, professional support, research networks, and collaboration opportunities.

Through this program, NAS hopes to enhance the ability of young researchers to produce quality research that benefits society and to form valuable partnerships.

The academy sees mentorship as a key tool for boosting Nigeria’s scientific community and helping develop future research leaders.

NAS is the top independent scientific organization in Nigeria. The academy is in a unique position to influence the country’s policies and strategic direction with scientific knowledge. It is also committed to promoting and advancing science, technology, and innovation in Nigeria.
