NDC distances itself from Obi support group, cautions candidates

One of Nigeria's major opposition parties, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stepped back from a group backing its presidential candidate. This group recently formed a presidential campaign council (PCC).

The NDC stated that the PCC created by the OK Movement should not be taken seriously by the public.

"The party hereby dissociates itself in totality from the said OK Movement PCC announcement. It did not emanate from the party and should be disregarded by the public and the media," said NDC National Chairman Cleopas Moses in a statement released on Saturday.

The OK Movement, which stands for Obi-Kwankwaso, is one of the independent groups rallying support for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. They are the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the NDC.

Despite this support, the NDC's statement shows that it is not happy with the actions of the OK Movement. Mr Moses hinted that the group's actions might "undermine the party."

In his statement, the party chairman urged all candidates and their supporters to respect the party structure.

"All candidates of the party must appreciate that they are not running as independent candidates," he wrote.

According to PREMIUM TIMES, this is not the first time the NDC has expressed worries about groups backing its presidential candidate.
