The new judges of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice have promised to maintain fairness, integrity, and independence in their work. They also plan to work together as a team and ensure justice is delivered on time.

Hon Justice Charlyne Brumskine, the Court President, spoke on 19 October 2026. She opened a five-day training program for the new judges. The theme of the program is “Becoming an ECOWAS Judge: Judicial Excellence, Institutional Integration, and Effective Adjudication.”

Justice Brumskine congratulated her colleagues on starting their roles on 13 October 2026. She noted that serving in the regional Court requires a good understanding of the ECOWAS legal system, the Court's powers, and how it has operated for over twenty years.

The President outlined three key areas for the new judges: independence and integrity, teamwork, and effectiveness. She said, “Public confidence in the Court depends on the fairness, impartiality, and integrity demonstrated in every case.” She stressed the need for careful discussions, respect, and consistency in judicial decisions. She also pointed out the importance of reducing delays and improving how quickly justice is served. Additionally, she mentioned the need for better cooperation with Member States to ensure they follow the Court's decisions.

Justice Brumskine recognized the Acting Chief Registrar, Dr Ousmane Diallo, the program facilitator, Professor Friday C. Nwoke, and the Court's staff for their help in organizing the training.

The judges taking part in the orientation are Hon Justice Désire Henri AIHOU (Vice President), Hon Justice Henrietta Uzoamaka DIDIGU (Member), Hon Justice Yaouza OURO-SAMA (Member), and Hon Justice Awa BAH (Member).

In a welcome speech, Dr Ousmane Diallo, Acting Chief Registrar, shared the goals of the training program. He said it aims to help the new judges and their assistants fit into the Court’s system and operations.

Dr Diallo explained that the program will help participants understand the Court’s structure, department roles, and procedures. It will also clarify the duties of judges, legal staff, and other support teams while improving communication and teamwork among judges and staff.

The expected results from the orientation include a better understanding of the Court's structure and improved professional relationships. The program aims to ensure continuity, operational efficiency, and readiness among staff to support the new judges in their roles.
