The new players' representative on the board of the Nigerian Basketball Federation is Professor Lucky Abubakar Aliyu. He believes that basketball in Nigeria will start to improve and “come alive.”
Aliyu is a former basketball player, a security expert, and the Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service. He spoke after winning the election at Bentley Hotel in Abuja.
He promised to focus on youth development, grassroots activities, and efforts to revive Nigerian basketball over the next four years.
Aliyu said the new board gives everyone a fresh chance to rebuild the game. He wants to create programs for young players all over Nigeria.
“I am excited for the game of basketball. I am excited for these kids who are going to see us on board, and I assure you that the federation will have a wonderful board. We will have people who will love the game of basketball,” he said.
He stressed that the sport needs to grow from the grassroots level if the national team is going to succeed again.
“The game of basketball will come alive now. We need to develop from the grassroots so that the national team will come back. So do not worry, we have everything in stock for basketball,” Aliyu said.
