New York has paid tribute to two football legends by temporarily renaming streets after Thierry Henry and Pele. This is happening just before the World Cup kicks off.
The tournament is co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. It starts on Thursday, and the final will take place next month at MetLife Stadium. This stadium has been renamed to New York New Jersey Stadium, located just outside the city.
People gathered at West 50th Street and 6th Avenue in downtown Manhattan to celebrate the unveiling of "Thierry Henry Way" by city officials, as reported by FOX Sports.
Thierry Henry, who played for Arsenal and Barcelona, joined France’s team that won the 1998 World Cup. He made an appearance through video call during the event.
The 48-year-old became well-known in the United States after playing five seasons with New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer until 2014.
The city also renamed the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road in Queens after the Brazilian football legend Pele.
These street names will remain until November 1.
