The Niger State Government has sent its condolences to the families of those who died in a tragic road accident on the Minna-Bida Road.
The government stated that the driver involved was a staff member from the Government House. He was returning from a trip with other staff members.
Obed Nana, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, shared this in a statement on Wednesday. He clarified reports that linked the crash to the convoy of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Mr Nana explained that the vehicle was not part of any convoy with the governor. He also mentioned that other government staff who were in the accident are currently receiving treatment.
"Preliminary information available to the government indicates that the driver acted recklessly, resulting in this unfortunate incident," he said.
The government expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and urged drivers to follow traffic rules and drive carefully.
As PREMIUM TIMES reported earlier, five people died in the crash. This includes four students from the Federal University of Technology and the driver from the Government House.
A report from The Punch newspaper mentioned that the accident involved a vehicle carrying the Government House Director-General, Dauda Chikuba, and another vehicle with the students. Mr Chikuba has been taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Niger State Police Command is currently investigating the accident.
The government did not share more details about what caused the crash or the names of those who died in its statement.
