Nigeria and Germany to Meet for Important Talks

Nigeria and Germany will hold a major meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, will meet with her German counterpart, Johann Wadephul. This is his third trip to Africa this year.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday said the ministers will talk about economic cooperation, security, sustainable development, and a shared commitment to peace in the region and worldwide.

The statement said, "The consultations aim to further strengthen the longstanding relations between both countries."

The meeting will allow both ministers to review Nigeria-Germany relations. They will look at the progress made in implementing existing agreements and areas for cooperation.

Talks will focus on expanding economic and commercial partnerships. They aim to attract more German investment into Nigeria's key sectors. They will also discuss cooperation in renewable energy, green industrialization, vocational education, and skills development. Strengthening collaboration in science, technology, and innovation will also be part of the talks.

Earlier, PREMIUM TIMES reported on Mr. Wadephul’s visit to Nigeria. His trip is part of a three-nation tour. He started in Mauritania, then came to Nigeria, and will go to South Africa next.

Earlier this year, he visited Ethiopia, Kenya, and Morocco. His many trips to Africa in the last seven months show Berlin's effort to connect more with the continent.

The minister will be with a group that includes German parliament members, CEOs, and high-ranking officials from German IT and energy companies.

The German Embassy in Nigeria shared that Mr. Wadephul will visit Lagos as the second part of his trip before leaving.

He is also expected to meet with the President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Omar Touray, during this trip.

Germany is the biggest economy in the European Union. It is one of the most influential member states and plays a leading role in shaping policies on trade, development cooperation, climate action, and foreign affairs.

Germany is also one of Nigeria’s important trading partners in Europe. It contributes significantly to development programs across Africa.
