Nigeria at 66: NOA Calls for Citizen Support for Unity and Development

As Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has asked for renewed dedication to national unity and growth. They want citizens to support the government's efforts to keep the progress made since independence and create a more peaceful and prosperous nation.

Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General of NOA, shared this message ahead of the anniversary. He described Nigeria’s freedom from colonial rule as a key moment that allowed Nigerians to shape their own future and destiny.

Issa-Onilu noted that Nigeria has made steady progress over the years, despite facing challenges. He urged citizens to acknowledge the achievements while staying focused on areas that need improvement.

"We must continue to hold on to the gains of our independence by taking responsibility for the Nigeria we want. The progress of our country depends not only on what the government does, but also on what each of us contributes as citizens," Issa-Onilu said.

He went on to emphasize that the government alone cannot build the Nigeria that people want. He called for more participation, cooperation, and commitment from Nigerians to support national development efforts.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the DG encouraged Nigerians to protect the peace and unity of the country. He urged everyone to respect political differences, reject hate speech and violence, and solve disagreements through lawful and democratic methods.

The DG insisted that political competition should not weaken the ties that bind Nigerians. He also encouraged citizens to engage with issues, respect different opinions, and uphold the rule of law before, during, and after the elections.

Talking about the role of citizens beyond the independence anniversary, he urged Nigerians to maintain the gains of independence through hard work, self-reliance, and responsible citizenship. He stressed that every Nigerian plays a part in building a stronger nation through productive efforts, respect for national values, peaceful coexistence, and positive contributions to their communities.

The DG wrapped up by affirming the Agency’s commitment to promoting patriotism, national unity, and responsible citizenship. He promised to provide citizens with accurate information on government policies and programs while encouraging active participation in the nation’s development.
