The National Sports Commission has set up a caretaker committee for the Nigeria Judo Federation. This follows the International Judo Federation's decision to dissolve the Federation’s board.
The approval comes under Section 16 of the National Sports Commission Act, 2023. The six-member committee starts work immediately. They will manage the Federation until new elections are held and a new board is in place.
Sheriff Hammed is the chair of the committee. Other members include Ekuta Ewa, Sule Musa, Bashir Bassey, and Oladipupo Idowu. Amayo Ngozi will act as Secretary.
The Commission said the committee’s job is to handle the daily running of the Federation. They will also help make necessary changes to improve how the Federation is managed.
The committee has clear tasks. They need to amend the Federation’s constitution to meet the International Judo Federation's requirements. They will hold an Annual General Meeting to review and approve these changes. They are also responsible for organizing elections while they are in charge. Finally, they must ensure a smooth transition to the new elected board once the elections are over.
The Commission has urged the committee to work carefully and fairly. They should focus on the growth of judo in Nigeria above all else. The members are also directed to work with all relevant stakeholders for better management of the sport.
This appointment will last until the elections are done and the new board takes over.
The announcement was made in a statement on October 9, 2026, by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media in the Office of the Director General of the Commission.
