The National Sports Commission just set up the boards for four national sports federations. They told the new members to focus on accountability as they work to develop sports in Nigeria.
The inauguration took place on Thursday in Abuja. Director General Bukola Olopade told the new boards to see their appointments as a call to serve the public.
"These appointments come with a responsibility to serve diligently, uphold the highest standards of accountability and put the interests of our athletes and Nigerian sports first."
Olopade continued, "We expect the new boards to work as a team, develop clear priorities and deliver measurable progress in their respective sports. Our goal is to build stronger federations that can nurture talent, compete successfully and contribute meaningfully to the growth of Nigerian sports."
He stressed that good administration is key to finding and developing talent. It also helps to improve competitiveness and ensures Nigeria keeps making progress in different sports.
The boards that were inaugurated include the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Nigeria Arm Wrestling Federation, Nigeria Padel Federation, and Nigeria Fencing Federation.
Dr Mustapha Abdullahi is the new president of the basketball federation. Rita Mosindi will serve as the secretary-general. Engr. Samuel Jackson leads the arm wrestling federation, with Dorothy Benard as the secretary-general. Rt. Hon. Jimi Benson heads the padel federation, with Israel Inwang as secretary-general. Adeyinka Samuel is president of the fencing federation, with Javan Bernard as secretary-general.
The commission encouraged the boards to build on what is already in place. They should strengthen grassroots participation, boost athlete development, and improve Nigeria’s representation in regional, continental, and global competitions.
