Writer, painter and cultural entrepreneur, Suchet Baba, has called for the need to spread Nigeria’s creative industry. She wants more investment in artistic spaces outside the usual cultural centers like Lagos.
Baba, who founded the Arts and Vibes festival, said that new talents across Nigeria need better platforms. These platforms should help them work together, gain visibility and grow their artistic skills over time.
She believes the idea came from seeing the untapped potential of creatives in various regions. There is a need to connect them with opportunities that often get stuck in big cities.
Through her platform, Baba wants to change the way creative resources are shared. She aims to create spaces where artists can meet, try new things and share stories that reflect their real-life experiences.
Baba is also passionate about highlighting stories that often get ignored. She wants to use modern art and storytelling to capture and reshape what cultural identity means.
Over the years, Baba’s work has gained her recognition both locally and internationally. In 2023, she received the Prince Claus Fund Seed Award. This is a partnership with the British Council, given to cultural practitioners who are working creatively in their communities.
She also took part in the 2025 Atelier for Young Festival Managers in Chemnitz, Germany. There, she met with cultural leaders from around the world and shared ideas on how to manage festivals and develop creativity.
Her writing and art have also caught people's attention. In 2025, she was longlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and was shortlisted for the Alinea Prize in Nonfiction. This helped strengthen her reputation as a storyteller focused on true African narratives.
