Troops from Operation Hadin Kai, a joint task force in North-east Nigeria, have killed four key commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). This includes two notable Arab fighters during an operation in Kukawa, Borno State, an official reported.
In a statement on Sunday, Mohammed Goni, the spokesperson for the task force, said the operation started on 31 October. It focused on ISWAP leaders. Those killed included Abu Hajara, a member of the group’s Shura Council, and Abu Walid, a close ally of wanted ISWAP Wali (governor), Ba Shuwa.
Mr Goni, who is a captain in the Nigerian Army, mentioned that several foot soldiers were also killed during the operation. This included air support along with ground fighting.
The military spokesperson said the troops seized many weapons and communication devices. He added that this victory showed the task force's commitment to keeping pressure on terrorist groups in the area.
This success follows another win in Buni Yadi, Yobe State. There, troops stopped an ISWAP attack and killed about 55 terrorists. This included key commanders like Ali Gajiri (Munzir), Habu Faruk, and Commander Gogore. Sadly, one soldier died, and two others were hurt during the Yobe attack, which aimed at the North East Theatre Training School (NETTS).
