Team Nigeria had a strong showing in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday. Ruth Usoro won silver in the women’s long jump. The men’s 4x100m relay team finished with bronze after a tense post-race appeal.

These latest medals helped Nigeria stay as Africa’s top nation on the Commonwealth Games medals table. It marked another successful day for Nigeria’s athletics team in Glasgow.

Usoro gave one of her best performances this season to win silver in the long jump. She jumped a season-best 6.87 metres on her first attempt, taking an early lead and putting herself in the running for gold. Usoro had two fouls in her next jumps, but her first mark kept her competitive throughout the event. She ultimately finished with the silver medal.

This medal added to Team Nigeria’s strong performance at the Commonwealth Games. The athletics team has helped boost the country’s medal count as the event comes to a close.

The men’s 4x100m relay team also put in a solid effort, finishing with a season-best time of 38.12 seconds. The team, made up of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Adekalu Fakorede, and Udodi Onwuzurike, initially finished in third place behind Australia and Canada.

However, Canada was disqualified after the race, which moved Nigeria into second place. But Canada appealed this decision successfully, getting their silver medal back, which pushed Nigeria back to third.

Despite the setback, the Nigerian team remained positive after the race. They expressed confidence that they still have more to give as they prepare for future international events.

The relay team’s bronze medal highlighted a sprint squad that shone in Glasgow. Earlier in the Games, Kayinsola Ajayi won bronze in the men’s 100m, ending Nigeria's 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal in that event. Udodi Onwuzurike also won silver in the men’s 200m.

Team Nigeria wrapped up their time in Glasgow with another bronze in the 4x400m Mixed relay. With Usoro’s silver and the relay team’s bronze, Team Nigeria enjoyed one of its most successful Commonwealth Games in recent years. Athletics, along with weightlifting and para-athletics, played a big part in the country's strong medal count in Glasgow.
