Team Nigeria started strong at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday. Veteran para-powerlifter Roland Ezuruike brought home a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A event.

The 50-year-old came close to winning gold but missed his last lift attempt. He tried to lift a Commonwealth Games record of 190kg.

Ezuruike finished with a total of 153.9 points from two successful lifts. This earned Nigeria its first medal of the Games.

This silver medal adds to Ezuruike’s impressive career. He has been winning medals for Nigeria for nearly 20 years.

Ezuruike looked disappointed after missing out on gold. But he celebrated his silver medal while standing on the podium.

His latest win shows Nigeria’s strength in para-powerlifting. The country aims to win more medals as the competition continues.
