Team Nigeria got its first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in a big way on Friday. Esther Nworgu won gold in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event in Glasgow.

Nworgu delivered an amazing performance, lifting 123kg to earn 119 points. This victory gave Nigeria its first gold medal at the Games.

The joy for Team Nigeria continued as Esther Oyema won a silver medal. She had a best lift of 125kg and scored 115.5 points. England's Olivia Broome took the bronze with a lift of 119kg and 106.6 points.

Earlier in the competition, Nworgu set two Commonwealth Games records. This showed her strength and confirmed her as one of the top performers in Glasgow.

Her win came just hours after veteran para-powerlifter Roland Ezuruike opened Nigeria’s medal tally with a silver in the men’s lightweight event. This gave the country a strong start in the Games.

With this latest win, Nigeria is on track for its best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games in 76 years.

Now that the first gold medal is won and two silver medals are added, Team Nigeria wants to keep this momentum going. More athletes are set to compete in para powerlifting, athletics, wrestling, boxing, and other events in Glasgow.
