The New Nigeria Peoples Party has announced that despite some delays from court cases, they will present candidates for over 90 percent of all elective positions in the 2027 general elections across Nigeria.
The party's Founder, Boniface Aniebonam, shared this news in Lagos on Tuesday while talking to journalists after the emergency National Working Committee meeting. The meeting took place at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa, Lagos, and included NNPP NWC members from all over the country.
Aniebonam mentioned that presenting candidates for all positions does not stop the party from forming alliances with other political parties that share similar goals and beliefs as the NNPP for the upcoming 2027 elections.
“The NNPP, as you all know, has had so much delays. We are happy we have surmounted most of it. In the following weeks, Nigerians will begin to see and meet our candidates in their various states.
“We can work with parties, where we feel they have stronger hold and vice versa,” Aniebonam stated.
Presidential Ticket Zoning
He further explained why the NNPP will not zone its presidential ticket. Aniebonam said zoning is for parties that have already contested and won the presidency, not for those still working towards that goal.
“If we will ever consider zoning, it is to be when we would have won a presidential election. However, the NNPP has never supported the idea of zoning. We believe that the best person with integrity who can deliver should be allowed.
“Even if successors have to come from the same region, as long as they deliver on good governance.”
Aniebonam also mentioned that the party plans to hold a non-elective convention before the end of August. This convention will allow members to discuss various issues affecting the party.
“NNPP members have a lot of decisions to make on some issues that we do not want to be deliberated upon by the NWC alone. We want inclusive decision making on those issues,” he said.
He urged former members who left the NNPP due to the internal leadership crisis to come back as the party prepares to replace placeholders.
