FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Wike is a strong kingmaker, but his aggressive moves have triggered a serious backlash. Many APC governors call him "politically toxic" or a "liability". They have asked President Tinubu to choose between his loyal party members and Wike. They argue that the FCT Minister acts like a warlord, threatening the stability of our political system.
I am not a politician, but I follow politics closely. I love Nigeria deeply. After living in Europe for 40 years, I am still very interested in what happens back home.
This morning, I felt the urge to write about Nyesom Wike, a rising figure in Nigerian politics.
I refer to him as El Terrible of Nigerian politics. Before his supporters respond, I want to clarify that I do not mean this negatively. I see him as someone who is feared by the political elite in Nigeria.
Politicians in Nigeria fear Wike because of his strong political influence, financial power, and aggressive style. As the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Wike acts like a unique player who holds federal power while not fully aligning with any political party.
Wike's Impact on APC Governors
Wike leads a cross-party alliance known as the Rainbow Coalition. This coalition has made many APC governors uneasy.
Challenging Local Control: APC governors worry that Wike is using this coalition to back new candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives in their states for the 2027 elections.
Upsetting Power Dynamics: Big politicians like Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma fear that Wike’s coalition will block their future goals, such as running for the Senate Presidency, by placing loyalists in key positions.
Wike's Position Among Opposition
Wike has a unique role. He is still a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but serves in an APC presidential cabinet while working for President Bola Tinubu's reelection.
Opposition leaders like Atiku and Makinde claim Wike only stays in the PDP to weaken it from the inside. They believe his actions make it hard for a strong united opposition to fight the ruling party.
Because he operates in both worlds, politicians do not know where Wike's true loyalty lies, causing distrust and tension.
Wike Holds the “Political Receipts”
Wike is feared because he keeps a record of political favors and financial support. He often reveals these alliances when it benefits him. In Nigeria, where parties frequently change alliances, Wike is known for calling out politicians who sought his help in the past. This tactic can damage their reputations.
Ruthless Tactics and Influence
Critics say Wike’s aggressive style is a big reason for the fear he inspires.
In Rivers State and the FCT, he has been accused of using intimidation. He even threatens to remove elected officials who oppose him, like FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe. He uses his resources to undermine opposition groups.
Some local commentators say many prefer to stay silent or back down instead of confronting him directly.
Wike The El-Terrible
While Wike is a strong kingmaker, his aggressive actions have led to significant pushback. Many APC governors call him "politically toxic" or a "liability". They have asked President Tinubu to decide between his loyal party members and Wike, saying the FCT Minister acts like a warlord, threatening the political system's stability.
In my view, Wike is the next political genius in Nigeria after Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Many see Wike as a bad genius, but I believe he is a genius nonetheless. Whether you like him or not, this man will teach his fellow politicians how to think politically.
My advice to those afraid of Wike is to study him. Instead of making enemies, it is better to build alliances with him and learn from his political skills. Wike, the El Terrible, is a man for the future.
In my next article, I will compare Wike and Peter Obi. I will explore the lessons and opportunities for both men and for Nigeria as a whole.
For the love of God, Church, and nation.
