Ogun Polytechnic Students Seek Justice After Colleague's Death

The National Association of Polytechnic Students, South-West Zone, has condemned the alleged killing of Ahmed Sekinat. She was an HND II student at ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State. Sekinat reportedly died during a suspected armed robbery. The association is calling for a thorough investigation and better security for students.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the General Secretary, Musbau Mubarak, described the incident as "unfortunate and barbaric."

PUNCH Online learned that Sekinat, who was studying Marketing, suffered a serious machete wound during the attack. Several other students also reported injuries of different levels.

NAPS said it is waiting for the outcome of investigations by the authorities. But they pointed out that this incident shows the rising insecurity faced by students in and around schools.

"The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), Southwest Zone, strongly condemns this unfortunate and barbaric act. No student should have to live in fear or lose their life while pursuing education. The protection of students remains a fundamental responsibility of government, security agencies, and institutional authorities," the statement said.

The association is also worried about reports that security personnel took too long to respond to the incident.

"We are equally disturbed by reports alleging a delayed response from security personnel despite the emergency nature of the incident. If these reports are confirmed, such delay would represent a grave failure in the duty to safeguard lives. Prompt emergency response is essential and must never be compromised," it added.

NAPS has called on the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Government, ICT Polytechnic management, and other relevant bodies to carry out a "thorough, transparent and impartial investigation" into the event.

They also want the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible. The association insists on better security within and around tertiary institutions in Ogun State. They are pushing for improved emergency response systems and closer cooperation between school management, security agencies, host communities, and student leaders.

"The continuous rise in security threats facing students is unacceptable. Educational institutions must remain safe environments where students can pursue academic excellence without fear of violence or criminal attacks," the association stated.

NAPS extended its condolences to Sekinat's family, the management, staff, and students of ICT Polytechnic, Itori. They also wished the injured students a quick recovery.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety, and rights of polytechnic students. They declared, "Justice for Ahmed Sekinat. Student Lives Matter. Safe Campuses Are Non-Negotiable."

Attempts to get a response from Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, were unsuccessful. Calls to her phone were unanswered, and a text message sent had not been replied to at the time of this report.
