Super Falcons player Esther Okoronkwo has claimed that $700 was stolen from her wallet. This happened while Nigeria's team was getting ready for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca, Morocco, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Okoronkwo made the claim in several posts on her Snapchat account. She said that many of her teammates also had money taken from their wallets while they were away from their rooms at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca.
Initially, Okoronkwo said that $500 was missing from her wallet. She later updated this amount after checking her money again.
"This hotel Marriott in Casablanca just stole about a lot of people’s money from their wallet! They just stole 500 USD from me!! They stole couple of dollars from my teammate," she wrote at first.
Later, she corrected herself, saying, "Guys, I did my calculations wrong. They actually stole $700, not $500 USD."
Okoronkwo accused the hotel’s housekeeping staff of taking the money. She wrote, "The cleaning people stole the money. So they waited while we weren’t in the room to clean and steal the money."
She said the players confronted the hotel staff about the missing money but were not happy with the answers they got. "We started talking to them and they don’t have answers. They also started being disrespectful," she added.
Despite this issue off the field, the Super Falcons have kept training for their WAFCON title defense. They got a boost on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Tanzania in a pre-tournament friendly. Okoronkwo scored the winning goal in that match.
Justine Madugu’s team will kick off their campaign against Malawi on Tuesday at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. They will also face Zambia and Egypt in Group C.
Nigeria, the record 10-time African champions, are looking for their 11th WAFCON title.
