An Olympic medalist, Emmanuel Peters, has shown support for the Waychamp electronic scoring system in Nigerian taekwondo. He believes it will greatly help the sport's growth in the country.
Peters spoke at the first Michael Opeyemi Bamidele National Taekwondo Championship in Lagos. The new electronic scoring equipment was used during the competition.
The former international athlete praised the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria for bringing in equipment similar to what is used in major international events.
“It was great to have the best world-class equipment for the event, especially in the very first edition of the competition,” Peters said.
He added, “We all look forward to having our athletes compete under the best template. I was shocked to see the facilities on display at the MOB Championship. I also congratulate the TFN for putting up a good show.”
Peters believes the championship can help the federation find young talents all over the country.
“There are good talents all over the federation and it is competitions like this that can help in identifying the hidden talents,” he said.
He also said that the new electronic scoring system is important for the growth of taekwondo in Nigeria and Africa.
“The use of the Waychamp electronic system is a massive boost to the game in Nigeria and Africa. It is only people who know about taekwondo that will appreciate it more,” Peters said.
The championship gathered athletes and officials from different parts of Nigeria. The organizers hope this event will become a regular platform for finding and developing talent.
