Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu got injured just minutes after scoring for Trabzonspor in their UEFA Conference League match against Finnish team KuPS Kuopio on Thursday. Another Nigerian forward, Cyriel Dessers, scored his first goal in the competition for Panathinaikos.
Onuachu needed only three minutes to make an impact at Tammela Stadium. He finished a pass from former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, giving the Turkish team an early lead.
But what started as a great game quickly turned into a worrying situation for Trabzonspor. The Nigerian forward went down with an injury and could not continue.
Onuachu had to leave the game in the 10th minute, just seven minutes after he scored. Franculino Djú came on to replace him.
This injury is frustrating for Onuachu, who was making his first start since Thomas Reis took over as Trabzonspor's coach. He had mostly been coming off the bench in recent matches as he tried to secure a regular spot in the lineup.
His selection against KuPS was a chance to impress in Europe, and he took it quickly by scoring. Sadly, the injury ended his chance to build on that early success.
This incident raises concerns about the striker’s fitness. Trabzonspor has more domestic games coming up in the next weeks.
The club has not yet released any official news about the type or seriousness of Onuachu’s injury. His availability for upcoming matches is still uncertain as they will assess him further.
Meanwhile, Cyriel Dessers provided a much-needed boost for Panathinaikos. He scored his first UEFA Conference League goal as the Greek team beat Bosnian side Borac Banja Luka 2-1 on Thursday night at the OACA in Marousi.
Dessers broke the deadlock with a penalty in the first half after a foul inside the box. After a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check, the referee awarded the penalty, and Dessers calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Mladen Jurkas the wrong way.
Panathinaikos maintained their lead into the second half. Zambian midfielder Kings Kangwa added a second goal to strengthen the hosts' position.
Borac Banja Luka tried to fight back, and Serbian midfielder Milos Jojic scored to reduce the deficit. However, Panathinaikos held on to win 2-1.
For Dessers, this goal is a key moment as he tries to gain momentum after a tough start to the season due to fitness issues. He had already made a big impact in the qualifying rounds, scoring three goals in three matches to help Panathinaikos secure a spot in the group stage.
This latest goal was his first since the Greek club qualified for the main tournament. It gives him hope as he works on getting back to full fitness.
Dessers now wants to use this goal as a stepping stone to regain his best form and become a consistent attacking threat for Panathinaikos in future matches.
