Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has promised to keep providing the camp facilities needed for a safe and comfortable environment for corps members in the state.

Otti spoke at the swearing-in ceremony for 1,584 corps members for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I. The event took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna in Bende Local Government Area.

He called the corps members “ambassadors of hope.” He believes their service year will help strengthen national unity and improve development at the grassroots level.

The governor was represented by his Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to youth development and promoting national integration.

Governor Otti announced that the second phase of improving the camp would start soon. This includes upgrades to the hostels and staff quarters, as well as building a new standard parade ground.

“These upgrades are meant to give you a good environment to learn, grow, and develop the skills you need to do well during and after service,” he said.

He encouraged the corps members to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme seriously. He said it fits with Abia’s aim of boosting innovation and entrepreneurship.

He stated, “With N77,000 monthly allowance, plus extra stipends from some PPAs, I encourage you to embrace a savings culture. Use NYSC business funding opportunities to start small-scale businesses.”

The governor warned the corps members to stay away from cultism, drug abuse, and other bad behaviors. He noted that security agencies would take action against anyone who breaks the law.

He also advised them to avoid traveling at night and unauthorized trips according to NYSC safety rules.

“Abia is known for peace and hospitality. I urge you to respect our culture, avoid tribalism, and promote unity wherever you are sent,” he said.

Earlier, the NYSC state Coordinator, Yunusa Tanimu, stated that 1,584 corps members, made up of 680 males and 904 females, were registered for the orientation course.

Mr Tanimu praised Governor Otti for his ongoing support for the NYSC, especially with the renovation of corps lodges, improving camp feeding, and providing logistics.

He asked for more help in furnishing the new NYSC state secretariat and finishing the multipurpose hall at the orientation camp.

While addressing the corps members, he said, “Since you arrived, you have shown discipline, resilience, and enthusiasm.

“I urge you to keep this spirit alive, engage actively in all camp activities, and see your service year as a chance for self-discovery and making a national impact.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the state Chief Judge, Justice Lilian Abai, administered the Oath of Allegiance to the corps members, with Justice Chido Nwakama representing her.
