The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has stated that the state is ready for peaceful political activities. He warned that any form of violence during the 2027 election campaign will not be accepted.
Otti gave this warning on Tuesday in Umuahia when he inaugurated the Labour Party Campaign Council for the upcoming general elections. He said, “We have made this place peaceful and open. Violence will not be entertained. We are not going to tolerate violence.”
He mentioned that security agencies have been instructed to create a fair environment for all political campaigns. This order aims to ensure that the Labour Party, as well as other political parties and their candidates, can campaign without fear of intimidation or violence.
Otti pointed out that political campaigns in Nigeria are centered on political parties, saying, “Independent candidacy is not allowed in Nigeria yet.” He stated that all pro-groups of the Labour Party, like Abia Arise and various campaign councils of individual candidates, need to work together.
The governor advised candidates to collaborate with their party leaders and other key players to meet their goals. During the inauguration of the campaign council, Otti explained that being part of the council was a call to serve, not a chance for anyone to feel superior. He urged them to cooperate with party structures and grassroots stakeholders to ensure the party's success.
“Consider yourself as best among equals,” the governor said. He stressed that their main task is to work together for the party's victory. He instructed council members to engage with different groups within the party, highlighting that no one can run a successful campaign alone.
Otti emphasized that the leadership of the campaign involves more than just those at the inauguration. He noted, “The leadership for this campaign goes beyond people sitting here. Everybody is involved.”
He encouraged candidates to set up their own campaign councils. He believes this will strengthen the party and lead to better results. Otti assured that the state campaign council would oversee everything, while candidates and grassroots structures should also take charge of rallying support in their areas.
The governor pointed out that while the 2023 campaign was filled with promises, the 2027 campaign will focus more on real issues, achievements, and programs that benefit the people. He warned members not to let opponents distract them with propaganda.
He urged them to stay focused on the issues and effectively share the party’s message with the voters. He also revealed that the campaign council will have a Campaign Advisory Council, with former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ude Chukwu, serving as chairman.
In response to Otti’s address, the Director-General of the campaign council, Agwu Agwu, assured him that the council will work hard to meet and exceed his expectations. He promised to use their combined experience and dedication to secure victory for the Labour Party.
