More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress have joined the Peoples Democratic Party in Enugu State. This move comes as the 2027 general elections approach.
The group, led by Mr Godwin Obasi, an influential member of the NDC, was welcomed into the PDP by party leaders in Enugu on Sunday.
Obasi explained why they left the NDC. He said they chose to join the PDP because the NDC picked candidates that many in the party did not support.
He mentioned that the new members come from all 260 wards and all 17 local government areas in the state. "We decided that we were going to join the PDP. It is our right and choice. So, after he congregated, we are here today to officially join the PDP. And we are over 6,000 of us. We are from all the 260 wards and 17 local government areas in the state, and all of us have moved into the PDP from today," he stated.
The PDP Chairman in Enugu, Chief Vitus Okechi, praised their brave decision. He promised them full acceptance and equal opportunities within the party. He said they would have the chance to take part in all party activities and work towards lasting change in Enugu State.
While welcoming the new members, the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Chief Uche Nnaji, assured them they would be embraced by the party. He expressed that the state government had not fulfilled its promises to the people. He emphasized that everyone’s effort is needed to help improve the state.
