Former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji has officially announced his plan to run for president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. He aims to rebuild, unite, and reposition basketball in Nigeria.
Oyedeji shared his plans at a press conference in Lagos on Monday. This comes after months of talks with players and other stakeholders in basketball. He clarified that he is motivated by a desire to serve, not personal gain.
“I am not coming to take from basketball; I am coming to build a legacy that will outlive us all,” he stated.
With over 30 years in basketball as a player, club owner, administrator, and philanthropist, Oyedeji brings a wealth of experience. He served on the FIBA Players Commission from 2014 to 2019 and was elected as South West representative on the NBBF board in 2022. He is currently the president of the Nigeria Olympians Association and third vice president of the Nigeria Olympic Committee. He is also the first African to be the Secretary General of the World Olympians Association.
Oyedeji believes Nigerian basketball is at a critical point. He sees great talent and resources available, but proper structure and leadership are needed to succeed. If elected, he plans to create a sustainable system that benefits players, coaches, officials, stakeholders, and corporate partners.
His vision includes revamping the domestic leagues, enhancing player welfare, improving governance, and developing lasting infrastructure. He also promised to restore corporate trust through accountability and to seek global partnerships for investment.
Player welfare is central to his campaign. “Every decision made by the NBBF will prioritise the health, financial well-being and professional career pathways of our players on the domestic scene and our various national teams,” Oyedeji said.
He added, “We will establish professional operational standards for players, ensure timely payment of allowances and provide comprehensive insurance coverage.”
Oyedeji aims to bring his international experience, dedication to good governance, and passion for youth development to the NBBF. His main goal is not just to win the election but to strengthen the sport for future generations.
