Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has urged everyone involved in Nigerian basketball to put aside their differences. He wants them to support the new leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. This will help promote unity and development in the sport.
Dikko spoke on Thursday during the NBBF election congress at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. This event gathered delegates who came to elect a new board to take over from Musa Kida's outgoing administration.
The NSC chairman said this election is a chance for everyone to end the divisions within the federation. He wants them to focus on developing the sport instead of personal interests.
“Today is the day to show that we are for basketball. Whatever it is, let’s put the ball to a stop here and see how we can move forward together as one family,” Dikko said.
He recognized that different stakeholders supported various candidates during the election. But he urged them to unite behind the new administration for the next four years.
“Somebody is going left, somebody is going right, somebody is going back, but for the next four years, we will be speaking from the same time and the same situation,” he said.
Dikko also acknowledged how the International Basketball Federation has helped Nigerian basketball. He called for continued cooperation with this global body.
He assured everyone that the NSC is committed to programs that will increase participation, strengthen local leagues, and create chances for young players.
Meanwhile, the outgoing NBBF president Kida thanked President Bola Tinubu, Dikko, NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, and other stakeholders for their support during his eight years in charge.
Kida described his time as challenging but rewarding. He said he is leaving with a sense of fulfillment after dedicating his time, money, and passion to developing the sport.
“It has been a very tight block, but Alhamdulillah, we are here today,” he said.
Kida also promised to support whoever wins the election, no matter the outcome.
“I want to assure you that no matter who wins the elections, I will give you my unbiased support when you need it, if you need it, and most especially if you ask for it,” Kida added.
He mentioned that the ongoing organization of the women’s Premier League and improvements in the men’s competition were some of the successes during his time. He hopes the new board will continue building on what has been established.
As Kida's eight-year term ends, everyone is now looking at the new administration. They hope it will unite stakeholders, strengthen local competitions, and create a sustainable path for Nigerian basketball.
