Oyetola speaks out against violence after Osun election

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has strongly condemned the violence reported after the elections in Osun State. He urged security agencies to quickly arrest those behind the killings and other violent acts.

Oyetola, who used to be the governor of the state, shared his thoughts in a statement on his X account on Tuesday.

He said he was very worried about the rising violence and the loss of lives in different parts of the state.

"I condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. Violence against our people is a serious threat to the peace, culture, and democratic values that define our state."

He added, "No political ambition, local transition, or business interest can ever justify taking a human life. Politics should be a way to develop, not a reason for bloodshed."

He sent his condolences to families who lost their loved ones and called on the Osun State Police Command along with other security agencies to act fast to bring back order.

"Enough security personnel should be sent to tense areas, public spaces taken back from criminals, and anyone found responsible for killings and violence should be caught and punished," Oyetola stated.

He also asked stakeholders and residents to stay calm and solve problems by talking.

"I urge all stakeholders and citizens to show restraint, reject violence, and embrace dialogue when settling disputes. The growth and success of Osun should never be sacrificed for political or business interests," he said.

Oyetola’s statement came after reports of violence in the state following the governorship election.

On Monday, two people were reported dead in Ikire after an alleged attempt to take over a motor park at Naira and Kobo Junction.

Sources told PUNCH Online that drivers who were said to support the All Progressives Congress had been running the park until some drivers, believed to be from the Accord Party, showed up and tried to take control.

The situation led to a clash, during which two people were feared killed.
