The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement in Oyo State, Bimbo Adekanmbi, has said the people of the state will not reward Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s alleged poor performance at the National Assembly by making him governor.

This was stated in a message from Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Co-Director of Media and Publicity for the APM Campaign Council in Oyo. The statement was released in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday.

The council is worried that instead of highlighting his achievements as the current representative of Oyo South Senatorial District, Alli has focused on his past political roles. They said, “The senator’s constant mention of his political history raises serious questions about his work in the National Assembly and shows he may not have accomplishments that inspire public trust ahead of the 2027 governorship election.”

They continued, “Public office holders seeking higher positions must first show excellence in their current roles. Leadership should be based on performance, skill, and measurable impact rather than just holding multiple titles.”

The council argued that before asking for the chance to lead the entire state, Alli must provide the people of Oyo South and Oyo State with a detailed account of his work in the Senate. This includes his contributions to legislation, constituency projects, empowerment programs, and other real efforts.

They added that Alli’s ambition to be governor looks like he is asking the people of Oyo State to promote underperformance. He said, “The people of Oyo cannot be convinced to reward poor performance. The question for voters is simple: if a senator cannot show a strong record of achievements while representing one district, apart from billboards, why should he be trusted to govern the whole state?”

“Public office is not a ladder where poor performance is rewarded. The governorship of Oyo State should go to those whose records show real impact, innovation, accountability, and results.”

The council mentioned that across Nigeria, many first-term senators and public officials seeking higher positions are campaigning based on visible projects and legislative success that have improved the lives of their people.

They questioned why Alli seems hesitant to make his Senate record the focus of his campaign. “What the people want from Senator Alli is not a list of past offices. They want to see what he has done with the mandate given to him.”

“They want proof of effective representation. They want to see transformative constituency projects, legislative success, youth empowerment programs, economic aid, and development efforts that have positively impacted Oyo South.”

“The burden of proof lies with Senator Alli. If he believes he deserves to move from representing one senatorial district to leading the whole state, he must first show the people he has done well in his current job,” he said.

The campaign group added that the 2027 governorship election will be a test of skill, accountability, and results instead of just recycling political resumes. They insisted that Oyo voters are increasingly looking for real leadership and clear results.

They also stated that Adekanmbi’s Roadmap for Continued Development provides a clear alternative vision for Oyo State, focused on accountability, economic growth, infrastructure, job creation, and better living conditions.

The group believes the upcoming debate should center on ideas, performance, and the ability to deliver results, rather than showcasing past political roles. They challenged Alli to publicly show a complete record of his time in the Senate and submit his performance to public review.

“Democracy requires accountability. Every elected official must be ready to explain their work when asking for public trust again. The people of Oyo deserve leaders who can support their ambitions with real achievements, not politicians who expect past titles to replace current performance.”

“In the end, the governorship of Oyo should not be given based on political history. It should be earned through proven skill, measurable achievements, and a commitment to bettering the lives of the people.”

“Oyo voters will not reward poor performance in the Senate with a governorship position. Anyone wanting to lead this state must first present clear proof of success in their current role. The people of Oyo will choose Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi of the APM because his history in public office shows a strong commitment to skill, effective leadership, and measurable results,” the statement emphasized.
