PDP shakes up leadership in Kano, sets up caretaker committee

The Peoples Democratic Party has dissolved its State Working Committee in Kano State. This move sets up a caretaker committee to manage the party’s activities in the state.

The dissolution took effect immediately. A letter dated September 24, 2026, signed by the PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar M. Bature, was sent to the Kano State chairman.

The letter explained that the decision came after talks by the national leadership. It noted that only the State Working Committee was dissolved, while the ward and local government executives stayed in their positions.

“The entire PDP State Working Committee (SWC) for Kano State chaired by Dr Bello Gambo Bichi is hereby dissolved with effect from the date of this letter,” the party stated.

The North-West Caretaker Committee will now manage the Kano chapter until a new state executive is formed, according to the letter.

Responding to the news, the dissolved chairman, Bello Gambo Bichi, said he accepted the decision. He described it as a sacrifice for the unity and growth of the party in Kano.

Bichi mentioned that the dissolution is part of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party. He added that former governorship candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu, has also stepped back for Muhammad Sani Abacha.

He explained that dissolving the state executive was one of the steps in the reconciliation process, which he accepted for the sake of the party.

“We did this in the best interest of the party because we believe that Mohammad Abacha will be a stronger PDP candidate in Kano,” Bichi said.

He noted that Dalhatu’s decision to step aside and the dissolution of the state executive are efforts to fix internal disagreements and present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.

Bichi added that the North-West Caretaker Committee will coordinate the party’s actions in Kano until a caretaker executive is formed or a new state executive is elected.

This change comes shortly after the PDP replaced Dalhatu with Abacha as its Kano governorship candidate. This happened after Dalhatu withdrew his candidacy.

The party held an affirmation and replacement primary in Kano, where Abacha was chosen as its new candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
