Pele's World Cup jersey sells for $4.9 million at auction in the US

A jersey worn by soccer legend Pele in Brazil's first World Cup final sold for $4.9 million at a US auction on Thursday.

Pele, known as “The King,” was just 17 years old when he scored two goals in Brazil's 5-2 win against host country Sweden in 1958.

The blue shirt is now the second most expensive jersey ever sold at auction. An anonymous buyer outbid four others at Sotheby’s in New York.

The highest price ever paid for a jersey is $9.3 million. That was for a jersey worn by Argentinian star Maradona during a famous quarter-final match against England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Argentina won that game 2-1, thanks to two goals from Maradona. One of those goals is known as the “Hand of God,” where he used his hand to punch the ball into the net.
