Peter Obi Turns 65, Gives N10m to Rural Hospital

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), wants Nigerians to focus more on helping others instead of throwing big parties for personal milestones.

In a statement on Sunday in Enugu for his birthday, Mr Obi thanked God and promised to keep serving humanity.

He sees turning 65 as a time to think deeply about his life and how he can spend his remaining years helping God and people.

He pointed out that while birthdays in countries with better living conditions may lead to grand celebrations, Nigeria's current situation calls for serious reflection and a stronger commitment to solving the problems faced by many.

Mr Obi noted that even with Nigeria's rich human and natural resources, many people still struggle with poverty, poor health, joblessness, insecurity, and limited chances in life.

He stressed that these issues should inspire people to be more compassionate and dedicated to service instead of indulging in lavish birthday celebrations.

Mr Obi repeated his long-held belief that birthdays should be a time for thanks, reflection, and helping others.

"The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we are able to touch positively," he said.

He mentioned that this belief has guided him throughout his business career, as well as during his time as governor of Anambra, where he saw public office as a chance to uplift others.

Mr Obi recalled that when people or organizations wanted to honor him with expensive gifts or big parties, he always encouraged them to invest those resources in projects that would benefit the public.

"This approach has led to the building of schools, hostels, educational programs, and other facilities that help the less privileged over the years.

"The greatest honor anyone can receive is not found in gifts, ceremonies, or public admiration, but in knowing that one’s life has contributed, however modestly, to making another person’s life better," he said.

As part of his birthday celebrations, Mr Obi started the day with a thanksgiving Mass in Onitsha, where he thanked God for His grace, protection, guidance, and blessings throughout his life.

After the Mass, he went to St. Raphael’s Hospital, Umueri, a rural healthcare facility in Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated N10 million to support the hospital's work in providing quality healthcare.

Reflecting on his hospital visit, Mr Obi said meeting with patients reminded him of our shared vulnerability and highlighted the need for compassionate leadership.

He noted that many patients might not have the money to pay for their treatment but still deserve respect, kindness, and access to quality healthcare.

"True leadership is demonstrated by caring for people, especially those who are unable to repay acts of kindness," he said.

Mr Obi reiterated his belief that investing in healthcare and education are among the best contributions anyone can make to society.

"A hospital preserves life; a school shapes the future, and supporting both sectors is not merely an act of charity but a lasting investment in humanity and in the future of Nigeria," he said.
