The police have arrested several suspects and seized locally made guns and ammunition in different operations in Plateau State.
The Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, shared this news on Tuesday at the Inspector-General of Police’s conference in Abuja.
Mr Faniyan said the command is focusing on intelligence-led operations and community policing to stop crime and make it hard for criminals to find safe places.
“Plateau State will be too hot for them to operate,” Mr Faniyan warned. He added that the command has updated its crime prevention plans due to security issues in the state.
He said officers must maintain professionalism, discipline, integrity and transparency in their work. He warned them against corruption and illegal actions.
Mr Faniyan mentioned that the command is also working closely with residents and other security agencies to gather intelligence and help catch criminals.
He said a joint security operation involving the police, military, State Security Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other agencies took place in parts of the state after recent security incidents in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos local government areas.
This operation included showing force and covered vulnerable communities, hotspots and suburban areas to reassure residents and boost security presence.
The commissioner added that the command has started a statewide community engagement initiative to thank residents for their support and rebuild public trust in the police.
He said the command is dedicated to citizens’ welfare, quick responses to complaints and respect for human rights.
Arrests and firearm recoveries
Mr Faniyan said police operatives arrested suspects in different operations across the state. One of the arrests was a 24-year-old man in Jos South Local Government Area. Officers allegedly found a locally made Beretta pistol, two rounds of 9mm ammunition and two double-edged daggers with him.
He also said operatives from the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested two suspects during a routine patrol along the Anguldi-Vom Road and seized locally made firearms.
In another operation, a 24-year-old suspect was arrested in Bokkos for allegedly sexually assaulting a 23-year-old woman while she was farming.
He also mentioned that detectives arrested a 40-year-old man for the alleged rape of a nine-year-old girl.
The commissioner said police operatives arrested a 23-year-old suspect at a hotel in Bassa Local Government Area based on gathered intelligence.
He revealed that four suspects were arrested during a raid in Angwan Rogo, where officers found a large amount of dried leaves believed to be cannabis and other substances thought to be illegal drugs.
According to him, the command continues to monitor and raid known criminal hideouts and security flashpoints.
Mr Faniyan also said mobile police officers in Barkin Ladi had a gunfight with suspected bandits during an intelligence-led operation in the Kafi Abu area.
He added that police tactical operatives in Barkin Ladi saw suspected illegal miners who fled into nearby bushes when they approached.
The commissioner said some of the arrested suspects have been charged in court, while investigations into other cases are still ongoing.
He did not break down the arrests or say how many suspects have been charged.
