Plateau State University Lecturers Start Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has started an indefinite strike. This action is due to the university management's failure to meet six important demands.

The union announced the strike on Wednesday. This decision came after a meeting of its members. The union had given a 14-day ultimatum to the university administration on 11 August, which has now expired.

In a statement signed by the chapter chairman, Vincent Choji, and secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, the union said the demands are still unresolved. This is despite the expiration of the ultimatum.

The lecturers want the university to start the Contributory Pension Scheme. They also want the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. They are asking for payment of outstanding arrears from 1 January 2026.

Other demands include safe staff quarters, building trenches around the university’s perimeter fence, and stopping what the union calls intimidation of its leaders. They are also asking for payment of 22 months’ arrears related to the 25/35 percent wage increase.

The statement said, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.” This shows the union's disappointment with the management's response.

According to the union, the strike has the backing of ASUU’s National Executive Council. After this approval, the chapter's congress decided to stop all academic activities indefinitely.

The union has told its members to stop all academic activities until further notice. This means that classes and other school functions will not continue.
