Plateau United's coach Gbenga Ogunbote has said that his team lost their grip in Sunday’s match against Enyimba due to what he called “arrogance.” He urged his players to forget about the defeat and focus on their next Nigeria Premier Football League game, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Peace Boys faced a 2-0 defeat to Enyimba in their Matchday Seven match in Aba. Ifeanyi Ihemekwele and Richard Ezinne scored for the nine-time NPFL champions.
Ogunbote mentioned that Plateau United went to Aba aiming to take all three points but did not succeed.
“It was unfortunate. We came here with a different notion, but unfortunately, we lost the game,” Ogunbote told reporters after the match.
The coach also shared that a key player, Ibrahim Yahaya, will miss the next game after getting injured during the match.
“Another disappointing thing is that we lost a key player, Ibrahim Yahaya, to injury. He won’t be available for the next game,” he said.
Plateau United started strong and controlled the early part of the game. But they struggled to keep that momentum and ended up conceding twice to Enyimba.
Ogunbote acknowledged that his players let the match slip away despite their strong start.
“I don’t want to use the word complacency or unnecessary overconfidence. Honestly, that was just it.”
He added, “We had the game in our hands, but unfortunately, through our arrogance, we lost it.”
Even with the disappointment, the former Rangers coach encouraged his players to take the good from the loss, correct their errors, and quickly shift focus to the next match.
“But be that as it may, that’s part of the game. We have to move on, take the positives from the game, make amends, and move forward,” Ogunbote added.
Plateau United will have a chance to bounce back from this defeat when they face Kano Pillars in their next NPFL game at the New Jos Stadium.
