The Ebonyi State Police Command has started looking into the alleged attack on a civilian by officers from the Ohaukwu Police Division in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
The incident happened early on Monday and quickly gained attention after the victim's pictures went viral on social media.
A post shared by X user @martins_nwede on Monday included the image of the victim. It stated, "Officer Kingsley Esheya attached to Ohaukwu Division, Ebonyi State Command did this to unsuspecting citizen.
The officer must not go unpunished. This is bringing this to your notice. The CP is always aware but the accused is trying to cover this mess with lies."
On Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, announced that the officers involved had been identified, detained, and moved to the state command headquarters as instructed by the Commissioner of Police, Hope Okafor.
The Commissioner also told the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a full investigation into the matter.
Ukandu mentioned that the officers would face the right disciplinary actions based on what the investigation finds. "Ebonyi State Command has identified and detained the officers involved in the recent civilian altercation in Ohaukwu LGA. CP Hope Okafor has ordered a thorough investigation. The victim is receiving treatment at FETHA, and the Command wishes him a speedy recovery," the statement read.
The command sent its sympathy to the victim, who is getting care at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki.
It assured the public that the investigation will be honest, fair, and follow the right procedures. The command also emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on police brutality and misconduct, highlighting its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and protecting the rights of all citizens.
