The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two men for attacking police officers during a vehicle inspection in Bauchi.

A statement from the command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, shared on Sunday, said the incident happened on Saturday along Yelwa Road. Officers were carrying out their duties under Operation Velvet.

Habib explained that the ‘E’ Division Patrol Team stopped a vehicle driven by a man named Friday, whose last name has not been confirmed, and Yunana Ali. The officers asked to see the vehicle documents.

The suspects allegedly refused to cooperate and became aggressive. They physically attacked the patrol team and even tore the uniform of one police inspector.

The statement said, “The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two suspects for criminal conspiracy, obstruction of public officers on duty, assault, and malicious damage.

“On 3rd October 2026, at about 0900hrs, operatives attached to the ‘E’ Division Patrol Team, while on routine enforcement of Operation Velvet along Yelwa Road, Bauchi, intercepted a vehicle driven by one Friday (surname yet to be ascertained) and one Yunana Ali, and politely requested to see the vehicle particulars.

“Rather than comply with lawful directives, the duo allegedly became hostile, refused to present the documents, and resorted to physically assaulting the patrol team, in the process tearing the uniform of an Inspector of Police.”

The police said they managed to control the suspects and took them to the ‘E’ Division. An investigation is now underway.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the attack. He called it an insult to authority and a threat to law enforcement efforts aimed at keeping the public safe.

The statement added, “He reiterated that assault on police officers performing their lawful duties will not be tolerated, and reminded members of the public that the law provides legitimate channels for redress where grievances exist.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation. The command urges members of the public to remain law-abiding, cooperate with police officers on routine checks, and stay away from actions that could disturb public peace.
