Police arrest robbery suspect, seize gun

The police in Enugu State have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of armed robbery. They also recovered a locally-made pistol and a live cartridge during the operation supported by citizens.

Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesman in Enugu State, shared this news on Tuesday. He said the operation took place in Obollo Etiti, which is in Udenu Local Government Area.

Mr Ndukwe, who is a superintendent of police, explained that the arrest happened after receiving reliable information on 10 August around 1:45 p.m. This information warned the police about a young man who seemed suspicious at a hotel.

He said police acted quickly on the tip-off. They searched the suspect's bag and found the locally-made pistol and the live cartridge.

The spokesman mentioned that the suspect was detained and taken into custody with the recovered items. "During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed to being a member of an armed robbery gang that specialised in threatening and robbing POS operators of their valuables," he said.

He added that the suspect also revealed that his gang members ran away when he was arrested. The suspect will face prosecution in court once investigations are finished.

Mr Ndukwe quoted the state Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa. The commissioner praised the local resident who provided the important information.

He reminded everyone about the need to report suspicious people and activities to the police. He assured residents that they are working hard to find and arrest the other gang members who escaped. Investigations are still ongoing.
