The Bauchi State Police have arrested a 32-year-old man named Monday Dauda. He was caught trying to steal an electricity transformer belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company in Bogoro Local Government Area.
The police nabbed him while he was trying to take an armoured cable from the transformer at Bogoro General Hospital.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, shared this news in a statement on Friday.
Habib explained that the incident happened at around 12:30 am on October 8, 2026. A patrol team from the Bogoro Divisional Headquarters was out on their regular patrol when they noticed unusual activity near the transformer.
The patrol team saw something suspicious around the transformer and went to check it out. The statement said, "On October 8, 2026, at about 0030hrs, a patrol team attached to the Division, while on routine confidence-building patrol within Bogoro town, observed suspicious movements around an electricity transformer belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company situated within the premises of Bogoro General Hospital."
Habib said the officers found that Dauda had already cut the armoured cable from the transformer and was tying it to a motorcycle, ready to steal it.
"Upon discreet approach and inquiry, the operatives discovered that the suspect had already removed the armoured cable of the transformer and affixed same to a standby motorcycle with the intent to cart it away. He was immediately pursued and arrested," the statement added.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime. The police recovered the armoured cable and the motorcycle he used in the theft.
Habib also mentioned that the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, praised the officers for their alertness and professionalism.
The commissioner reminded everyone about the police's commitment to protecting important national infrastructure from vandalism and crime.
The statement also said that Aliyu has ordered the suspect and the items recovered to be taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation and prosecution.
