Police clear the air on Asaba airport attack rumours

The Airport Police Command has denied claims of a terrorist attack at Asaba International Airport in Delta State. They explained that the security operation seen at the airport was just a simulation exercise.

This clarification came in a statement on Monday from the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Adeola.

The Command stated that the exercise took place on Thursday, September 10, 2026. It was organized by the Office of the National Security Adviser to test how well security and emergency-response agencies can respond to incidents.

“The Airport Police Command wishes to clarify that there was no terrorist attack or security breach at Asaba International Airport. This is contrary to reports and narratives currently circulating on social media and other platforms,” the statement said.

According to the Command, the exercise involved security personnel and other stakeholders. They recreated a simulated incident within the airport to test their response capabilities.

The aim was to assess “existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures,” as well as how well agencies can respond to security emergencies.

This clarification was necessary after reports claimed armed men had invaded the airport, causing public concern.

But the Command called the operation a “controlled and authorised activity.” They asked the public not to confuse it with a real attack or invasion.

The police also urged travellers and other airport users to ignore these reports. They advised against spreading unverified information that could cause fear and panic.

“The Command reassures the public that the security situation at the airport remains under control. All relevant security agencies are vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport personnel, and facilities,” the statement added.

They also encouraged the public to trust information from authorized government and security agencies. This will help strengthen national security and protect important airport infrastructure.
