The Police in the Federal Capital Territory have found several crime hotspots in Abuja. They arrested 560 suspects during raids to fight crime in the city.

The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, shared this information on Tuesday. He spoke at a press briefing at the FCT Police Command Headquarters. He said the operations were based on intelligence and community policing.

Sanusi explained that the raids focused on known trouble spots in the area. This is part of the police's renewed effort against crime.

“The FCT Police Command, through intelligence gathering and community policing, has identified and raided several criminal hotspots across the Federal Capital Territory in the past week,” Sanusi said.

He added that these operations were done by different police divisions. This led to the arrest of 560 suspects and the recovery of weapons, drugs, and other illegal items.

“These raid operations were carried out by divisions across the command and resulted in the arrest of 560 suspects and the recovery of illicit drugs, arms and other exhibits,” he stated.

The police chief also mentioned some of the items seized during the operations. These included one locally made pistol, one locally made AK-47 rifle, and three rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

Sanusi said the operation is part of a continued effort to ensure criminals cannot hide in the capital city. “The achievements we present today reflect the firm stance of the FCT Police Command in ensuring that crime does not thrive within the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

He also talked about other significant successes. One of these was the arrest of a six-member kidnapping and “one chance” robbery gang. They were involved in the abduction of a woman in the Maitama area of Abuja.

Police operatives recovered the full ransom of N8.25 million that the victim’s family paid. They also seized two operational vehicles, a cutlass, seven pairs of AirPods, jewellery thought to be stolen, five mobile phones, and a laptop.

According to Sanusi, investigations revealed that this gang had been active along Kubwa Expressway, Maitama Federal Housing Road, and other parts of the FCT since 2024. They had extorted about N12.8 million from at least five female victims.

The commissioner also said four suspected kidnappers and their alleged suppliers of weapons and drugs to bandits were arrested in Kwali, Abaji, and Kuje Area Councils.

He noted that this operation led to the recovery of 42 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition hidden in a vehicle at Zuba Motor Park. They also found codeine syrup, suspected cannabis, tramadol, cash, and other items.

Sanusi assured that the command will keep fighting crime. “I wish to state that the FCT Police Command will not rest on its oars until these criminal elements are flushed out of the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

He encouraged residents to keep supporting the police with useful information. “I, therefore, enjoin members of the public to continue to partner with the police by providing timely information that will assist in anti-crime operations aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of residents across the FCT,” he added.
