A woman in Ogun State has had a N300,000 hospital bill wiped out after she asked the police for help. This came after she lost her baby following a Caesarean Section.
The woman, Precious Mathew, had the surgery at Longe Hospital Medical Centre in Sabo, Owode-Yewa, on 30 June. Sadly, she lost her baby after the operation.
According to Punch, the Ogun State Police Command said in a statement on Monday that the hospital bill was N400,000. Mrs Mathew had already paid N100,000, leaving a balance of N300,000.
Unable to pay the remaining amount, she went to the Owode-Yewa Police Division on Sunday for assistance. She explained her situation and asked for help with the debt.
The police took her case to the state Commissioner of Police, Olubode Ojajuni. He reached out to the medical doctor, Babanki Samuel, and asked for compassion in this tough situation.
After hearing her story, the doctor decided to waive the entire N300,000 debt. He showed kindness and understanding, allowing the woman to leave without any financial burden.
“Moved by the circumstances and in a remarkable display of compassion, the doctor voluntarily forgave the entire outstanding balance of N300,000, allowing the woman to leave without the burden of further payment,” the police statement said.
The police praised Dr Samuel for his act of kindness. They said this case shows how talking things through can help solve issues between the public and service providers.
“This intervention, devoid of confrontation or recrimination, opened a channel for dialogue and ultimately resulted in an act of compassion,” the police added.
