Police stop cattle theft, recover eight cows in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has stopped suspected cattle thieves from stealing eight cows in Darazo Local Government Area.

The police said the rustlers ran away after officers responded to a tip-off from a local resident on Thursday morning. They left behind the cows and a vehicle they used for the theft.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, shared this news in a statement on Friday.

Habib explained that the police got a call around 2:58am about suspected cattle thieves loading cows into a Chevrolet car with the registration number DAS 452 NE.

He mentioned, “At about 0258hrs, the Command received a timely tip-off from a vigilant citizen, who reported that a group of suspected cattle rustlers were sighted loading cows into a Chevrolet Saloon car with Registration Number DAS 452 NE.

“According to the report, two cows had already been forced into the vehicle while six others were held at the scene awaiting loading.”

According to Habib, officers from the Darazo Division quickly moved to the location after receiving the report.

He said the suspects ran into the dark once they saw the police, leaving the vehicle and the cows behind.

“Upon arrival at the scene, operatives recovered the abandoned Chevrolet saloon car with two cows inside, while the remaining six cows were found tethered nearby, yet to be loaded,” Habib stated.

He said the police secured the vehicle and the eight cows as evidence and started efforts to find out who owned them.

According to Habib, the cattle were later returned to their rightful owner on bond while a search was ongoing for the suspects who escaped.

The Police Public Relations Officer also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, who praised the resident for their quick action that helped recover the cattle.

The commissioner urged the public to quickly report any suspicious activities to the security agencies.

He assured everyone that the command is dedicated to protecting lives, property, and livestock throughout the state.
