The Deputy Inspector-General of Police for the South-east, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, has ordered quick security actions to deal with the rising cases of violent attacks and armed robberies in Aba, Abia State.
Onwuemelie gave the order on Tuesday during his visit to the police headquarters in Umuahia. This visit is part of his ongoing review of all police commands, following instructions from the Inspector General of Police, Rilwanu Disu.
He pointed out that some security issues need immediate attention. He specifically mentioned the violent attacks and robberies happening in Aba.
He noted that while these incidents might seem isolated, they need to be stopped quickly to avoid bigger problems later.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that around two weeks ago, an armed group attacked and robbed people at a shopping complex at the Okpulo Umuobo Junction near Aba.
Sources told NAN that after robbing a pharmacy, the robbers shot the owner and left behind a shotgun as they fled.
Addressing Other Issues
While discussing the worrying situation in Umuahia and other areas of the state, the DIG said activities often seen as "cultism" should instead be viewed as organized youth gang violence.
He stressed the need for smarter policing strategies to break up these criminal groups and reduce violence and fear.
Onwuemelie also pointed out how important it is to strengthen partnerships between the police and key groups, including schools. He expressed worry about new threats in university settings.
He explained that his visit aimed to boost how the police operate, improve leadership accountability, and ensure the current administration's policing goals are met.
He praised the commitment of the police officers in keeping people safe in Abia and acknowledged their efforts in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the state.
Focus on Officer Welfare
Onwuemelie confirmed the IGP's focus on the welfare of police officers. He assured them that steps are being taken to enhance their living conditions, including better housing and pension plans.
The police chief also discussed the topic of state policing. He reassured personnel that their interests will always be protected.
He announced that the Nigeria Police Force plans to adopt modern policing technologies. This includes using Artificial Intelligence in investigations.
He mentioned that these new measures will come with specialized training for police personnel in various commands and other important units.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Abia, Danladi Isa, expressed gratitude to the DIG for his visit to the command.
Isa promised to ensure that the command follows the IGP’s directives to enhance policing efforts in the country.
